Sportsman's Alliance of Maine

Maine’s largest sportsman’s organization with 8,000 members and a headquarters in Augusta, ME. SAM is considered the leader of Maine’s 300,000 sportsmen. SAM’s staff works at the legislature, state agencies and other forums on critical issues. SAM was organized in 1975 and is a 501 (c ) 3 non-profit membership organization to promote conservation of Maine’s wildlife resources and to be an advocate for hunters, anglers, trappers and gun owners throughout the state. SAM’s members have a real voice and impact on outdoor issues.

Institute for Legislative Action

In 2017, the SAM Board of Directors split the Sportsman’s Alliance of Maine into two sister organizations as a way to better serve our membership’s needs. Because we are involved in so many political battles, including referendums, lobbying at the State House and candidate endorsements during elections, the board established SAM ILA, according to Internal Revenue Service rules. With a C-4 designation, SAM-ILA will be less restricted and will be able to have more of an impact in Augusta and at the ballot box.

Because we are expanding our work in all areas, the creation of the new SAM-ILA organization enables us to defend the rights of sportsmen, whenever the need arises and without restriction.
